Background
Mustelidae, as the largest and most-diverse family of order Carnivora, comprises eight subfamilies. Phylogenetic relationships among these Mustelidae subfamilies remain argumentative subjects in recent years. One of the main reasons is that the mustelids represent a typical example of rapid evolutionary radiation and recent speciation event. Prior investigation has been concentrated on the application of different mitochondrial (mt) sequence and nuclear protein-coding data, herein we employ 17 nuclear non-coding loci (>15 kb), in conjunction with mt complete genome data (>16 kb), to clarify these enigmatic problems. 相似文献4.

Twenty-three polymorphic microsatellite markers were identified and characterized for Cyclura pinguis, a critically endangered species of lizard (Sauria: Iguanidae) native to Anegada Island in the British Virgin Islands. We examined variation at these loci for 39 C. pinguis, finding up to five alleles per locus and an average expected heterozygosity of 0.55. Allele frequency estimates for these microsatellite loci will be used to characterize genetic diversity of captive and wild C. pinguis populations and to estimate relatedness among adult iguanas at the San Diego Zoo that form the nucleus of a captive breeding programme for this critically endangered species. 相似文献

Site factors have frequently been shown to affect survival, growth, and reproduction in plant populations. The source-sink
concept proposed by Pulliam is one way of integrating this spatial demographic variation into population models. Source-sink
models describe a population where propagules from “source” habitats sustain less productive “sink” areas. We adapted this
concept to model the population dynamics of the understory palm Chamaedorea radicalis on two substrates, rock outcrops and forest floor. In our model, sources and sinks correspond to fine-scale demographic structure
within the population, rather than spatially discrete subpopulations as described in the Pulliam model. We constructed a stage-structured
population matrix model that integrates the site-specific demography of individuals across two habitats types that are linked
by migration. We then parameterized this model with field data from C. radicalis. To address whether observed differences in palm demography between rock outcrops and the forest floor were due to natural
variation between microsites or due to differences in browsing intensity from free range livestock, we parameterized separate
models based on the substrate-specific demography of protected, non-browsed palms and of palms exposed to burro browse. Results
showed that herbivory reduced survival and fecundity on the forest floor, which in the absence of seed migration resulted
in a projected decline of forest floor palms (sinks). However with seed dispersal, palms persisted and total population growth
(both substrates) was projected to be positive, indicating that seed dispersal from non-browsed palms on rock outcrops (sources)
was sufficient to sustain C. radicalis on the forest floor. 相似文献

A realistic understanding of primate morphological adaptations requires a multidisciplinary approach including experimental
studies of physiological performance and field studies documenting natural behaviors and reproductive success. For primate
feeding, integrative efforts combining experimental and ecological approaches are rare. We discuss methods for collecting
maximum bite forces in the field as part of an integrated ecomorphological research design. Specifically, we compare maximum
biting ability in 3 sympatric bamboo lemurs (Hapalemur simus, H. aureus, and H. griseus) at Ranomafana National Park, Madagascar to determine if biting performance contributes to the observed partitioning of a
shared bamboo diet. We assessed performance by recording maximum bite forces via jaw-muscle stimulations in anesthetized subjects
from each species. Behavioral observations and food properties testing show that the largest species, Hapalemur simus, consumes the largest and most mechanically challenging foods. Our results suggest that Hapalemur simus can generate larger bite forces on average than those of the 2 smaller species. However, the overlap in maximum biting ability
between Hapalemur simus and H. aureus indicates that biting performance cannot be the sole factor driving dietary segregation. Though maximum bite force does not
fully explain dietary segregation, we hypothesize that size-related increases in both maximum bite force and jaw robusticity
provide Hapalemur simus with an improved ability to process routinely its more obdurate diet. We demonstrate the feasibility of collecting physiological,
ecological, and morphological data on the same free-ranging primates in their natural habitats. Integrating traditionally
laboratory-based approaches with field studies broadens the range of potential primate species for physiological research
and fosters improved tests of hypothesized feeding adaptations. 相似文献

Abstract: Fighting and accidental injury commonly cause black rhinoceros (rhino; Diceros bicornis) death after release. Smaller reserves and higher conspecific density after release (release density) might increase a rhino's encounter rate with hazards like fenced boundaries and conspecifics. We conducted a science-by-management experiment on the influence of reserve size and release density on rates of movement, association, and injury and death amongst 39 black rhinos during the first 100 days after their release into 4 Namibian and 8 South African reserves ranging in size from 670 ha to 45,000 ha. Association rates were negatively related to reserve size and positively correlated with release density. There was also a negative relationship between the proportion of the reserve traversed by individual rhinos and reserve size. In reserves ≥18,000 ha association rates were consistently zero but became elevated in reserves ≤11,500 ha and at release densities ≤9 km2/rhino. Daily displacement did not increase with increasing reserve size >8,500 ha but in smaller reserves daily displacements indicated higher encounter rates by released rhinos with fenced boundaries. Three rhinos received fight-related injuries requiring intervention and 2 of 4 deaths were fight-related. All injuries and 3 deaths occurred in reserves ≤11,500 ha. Model selection based on Akaike's second-order Information Criterion indicated that the parameter release density alone best explained mortality risk. Traditionally considered risk factors, rhino sex, age, and presence of resident conspecifics, were superseded by the risk posed by releases into smaller reserves. Reserves ≤11,500 ha and release densities ≤9 km2/rhino pose an increasing risk to rhino survivorship and so larger reserves and lower densities than these should be favored as release sites. 相似文献

2012年10月至2015年5月,对中国贵州省麻阳河国家级自然保护区黑叶猴(Trachypithecus francoisi)的种群数量和分布进行了调查研究。本次调查采用了直接观察猴群计数、夜宿地观察、问卷调查和访问、未出版资料及文献补充4种调查方法。结果表明,麻阳河国家级自然保护区及周边共有黑叶猴72群(含保护区外2群)。基于直接计数的25个猴群,计算猴群平均大小为(7.7±2.9)只,并以此计算保护区及周边黑叶猴数量为554只。其中,凉桥片区共有41群,315只;龚溪口片区共有16群,123只;务川片区共有15群,116只。调查发现保护区黑叶猴的分布基本以麻阳河、洪渡河及其支流兰子河为中轴,以箱状河谷的峭壁上和河岸附近的植被区作为主要活动范围。67群猴群发现点位于离河流中轴线缓冲距1 500 m区域以内,占总群数的93.1%。因此,为了确保该物种的生存以及缓解当地人猴冲突,建议重点加强对河流两岸栖息地的保护管理和自然植被恢复,尤其在人口稠密区更为必要。 相似文献
